Samuels' Seafood to Buy and Why

Hiramasa Fillet~ Hiramasa Kingfish is bred in a controlled hatchery environment and grown in the pristine, unpolluted waters of Southern Australia. Clean Seas farms this fish to the highest environmental standards.

Suzuki / Mulloway~ The Suzuki Mulloway is a natural inhabitant in the seas of South Australia. Fed by the cold, saline rich waters of the Southern Ocean, the growing conditions of the Spencer Gulf are recognized for their pristine natural environment. Clean Seas complies with the strictest environment management practices for the protection of the marine habitat and sustainability.

Farmed Raised New Zealand Abalone~ Depletion of wild populations has encouraged the farming of abalone in many countries to meet the demand for this luxury seafood.

I
QF Bay Scallops~ Individually Quick Frozen bay scallops from Argentina. These beautiful scallops are sweet, small, and simply sustainable. MSC certified, and packed in a one pound bag.

Spanish Mackeral Fillet~ Mackerel is caught predominately using hook-and-line methods in both the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and can be considered a best choice. In the Southeast U.S., mackerel are a popular catch in both recreationaland commercial fisheries.

B
lack Cod Fillet (sablefish)~ Most sablefish are caught by deep water longlines, although traps and bottom trawls are also used. There’s no evidence of substantial accidental catch of other species or habitat damage from sablefish fishing.

Costa Rican Mahi-Mahi Fillet~ Commercial fishermen primarily use long lines and hook-and-line gear to catch mahi-mahi. These results in little to no by catch, and mahi-mahi caught with this method in the southeast U.S. is a best choice.

Wild Stripe Bass Fillet~ Striped bass are caught in recreational fisheries with mainly hook-and-line gear and in commercial fisheries with net gear. These gear types have little impact on fish habitat.

Australis Barramundi Fillet~ Barramundi is farmed in the U.S. in an environmentally sound way, making it a best choice.

Whole Tasmanian Salmon~ The salmon fish farms are located in this pristine marine environment of the waters of the Huon River, which rise in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. They are meticulously chill-packed to ensure the highest standards of quality.

Alaska Pollock~ The pollock fisheries catches their lot in the sparkling Alaskan waters. This fish are caught using pelagic trawling (or mid water) which does not harm the ocean floor.

Alaska Salmon~ These Alaska salmon are harvested such eco-friendly methods as by nets (drift and set gillnets, purse seine), trolling and fishwheels.

Albacore Tuna~ Caught in the cold fresh waters of the Pacific, fishers use trolling or pole-and-line methods for harvesting. Both are notably ‘clean’ fishing methods that catch one fish at a time. The absence of nets in both methods ensures the fishery is ‘dolphin free’.

Pacific Cod~ From the waters of the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, the longline fishery for Pacific cod is conducted with stationary lines with baited hooks.

Pacific Halibut~ Halibut is caught by longline fishery in the Bering Sea. This longline fishery does not damage benthos and benthic habitats and can select fish species and size by choice of hook size and design. Halibut are large fish; hence, employing a relatively large hook size reduces unwanted capture of smaller fish.

Red Rock Lobster~ Our red rock lobsters come from both the Baja Mexico California area and Western Australia. Both are caught using the environmentally sound methods of baited pots and traps. The traps have large gaps in the side which allow smaller (less than legal size) lobsters to escape.

Toothfish (Chilean Sea Bass)~ This sea bass is caught around the island of South Georgia and the plateau to the west around Shag Rocks. The fishing method is bottom set longlines, used only in winter months, between May and August.
