Austrovenus stutchburyi
Found in New Zealand waters only. It provides food and modifies the habitat, playing a critical role in filtering water. Cockles are a shallow-burrowing shellfish, found from subtidal to mid-tide levels. They are packed in a 10lb bags, and there is about 15 peices per pound. Clams are suspension feeders and filter passing water for their food. They are a delicacy in New Zealand, popular for their sweet taste and delicate texture. |
